Part of our mission statement here at Powell Church is to make disciples, and we define a disciple as “a follower of Jesus whose life is centering on loving God and loving others.” We want you to know that no matter what stage of your discipleship journey you may be on, we are offering four discipleship opportunities in the fall that will guide you in centering your life on loving God and loving others.
Take a look below, and see what focus may be right for you!
Knoxville Marriage Initiative
Discipleship focus: Nurturing marriage relationships
Don’t you wish when you said, “I do,” someone said, “Great, here’s how!” Marriage can be the most rewarding and fulfilling relationship you have and it can be the toughest endeavor of your life. Powell Church is partnering with Knoxville Marriage Initiative through Compassion Coalition to offer PREP Marriage Education. This seminar will help you see yourself and your partner in a whole new light, strengthening how you relate with each other. Marriages of all lengths and varying degrees of happiness are invited to participate in this 6-week seminar beginning August 27. To REGISTER NOW, go to the KMI website and click on calendar in the top right of the homepage, then click on the “Powell marriage workshop” and look for the August 27 date. You can do this by clicking right HERE. For questions, email Jamie Bauknight at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Covenant bible study
Discipleship focus: In-depth study of the bible
It’s that time of year where we begin our Covenant series. This will be an in-depth group study in which participants read and discuss the Bible together, learning how to love God and others better. Pastor Martha will lead three 8-week sessions that cover 80% of the Bible, that will span the fall through the spring, and is limited to 15 participants. The first session begins Wednesday, August 23, at 6:30pm. For information or to register, email Brooke at email@example.com.
Pathway to Peace
Discipleship focus: Spiritual practices that guide us as disciples
Life can be messy and rarely turns out the way we plan. Sometimes that leads us to be depressed, hopeless or discouraged. Discover new skills to find your way out of the maze of life’s struggles and disappointments. Pain can be transformed into peace by the renewing of our minds. A Pathway to Peace can help you navigate the unexpected twists and turns of life. Joy Gaertner will lead this 4 week study, beginning Sunday, September 10th, from 4:30-6:00. For questions, email Joy at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Sharing God’s Heart – The Least and the Last
Discipleship focus: Serving others
Sharing God’s heart for the least and the last is a 5 week study group where we will consider how to become the kind of people who please God by sacrificially loving our neighbor in need. Using a short but powerful devotional booklet by author Amy Sherman, we will look deeply into Scripture and intensely within ourselves to find how the Holy Spirit equips the followers of Jesus to transform from “selfish people consumed with our busyness and pleasure into self-giving people who – relying prayerfully and intentionally upon the strength of Christ – love others sacrificially, genuinely, and cheerfully”. Join Jamie Bauknight on Wednesday evenings, beginning September 6th from 6:30 – 7:30. Childcare provided. Email Brooke at email@example.com for more info.
